How to Build a Budget Home Studio for Young Musicians & DJs

Starting your music journey doesn’t have to be expensive! At RekordShop, we believe every young artist should have access to the tools they need to create, record, and mix their music. Whether you’re a DJ, producer, or singer-songwriter, setting up a budget-friendly home studio is easier than you think.

Here’s everything you need to get started with minimal cost while still achieving professional-quality sound.

🎛 Essential Equipment for a Cheap Home Studio

1. Computer or Laptop (💻) – The Heart of Your Studio

If you already own a laptop or PC, you’re halfway there! You don’t need the latest model—just make sure it can handle music software.

  • Budget Option: Any laptop or desktop from the last 5 years with at least 8GB RAM.
  • Pro Tip: If your computer is slow, free up space and close unnecessary apps when recording.

2. Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) – Your Music Software

A DAW is where you’ll record, edit, and produce your music. Luckily, some great free options are available!
Best Free DAWs:

  • 🎵 Cakewalk by BandLab (Windows) – Free, professional-grade software.
  • 🎶 GarageBand (Mac) – Perfect for beginners.
  • 🔥 Tracktion Waveform Free – A powerful free DAW for all platforms.

If you can invest, FL Studio Fruity Edition (£80) and Ableton Live Intro (£69) are beginner-friendly paid options.

3. Audio Interface – The Key to Pro Sound

An audio interface connects your microphone, instruments, and headphones to your computer.

  • Budget Option: Behringer UMC22 (~£40) – Simple and effective.
  • Slightly Better: Focusrite Scarlett Solo (~£100) – Industry standard for beginners.

Alternative for DJs: If you’re only mixing and producing, a USB DJ Controller might be a better choice (see below).

4. Microphone – Vocals & Recording

A USB microphone is the cheapest way to record without needing an audio interface.

  • Budget Option: FIFINE K669B (~£30) – Surprisingly good for the price.
  • Better Option: Audio-Technica AT2020 (~£80) – Great quality for recording vocals and instruments.

If you get an XLR microphone, you’ll need an audio interface (see step 3).

5. Headphones or Studio Monitors – Hear Everything Clearly

Speakers can be expensive, so start with closed-back headphones for accurate sound.

  • Budget Option: Audio-Technica ATH-M20X (~£40) – Great for beginners.
  • Better Option: Sony MDR-7506 (~£90) – Industry standard for mixing.

If you prefer speakers, look for PreSonus Eris 3.5 (£80) or Mackie CR3 (£90).

6. MIDI Keyboard – For Making Beats & Playing Instruments (Optional)

Not essential, but useful for making music faster.

  • Budget Option: AKAI MPK Mini Mk3 (~£80) – A great all-in-one MIDI keyboard.
  • Free Alternative: Use computer keyboard mode in your DAW!

7. DJ Setup (For Aspiring DJs)

If you’re more into DJing than production, swap the audio interface for a cheap DJ controller.

  • Budget Controller: Numark Party Mix II (~£80) – Simple, but works well.
  • Better Choice: Pioneer DDJ-200 (~£130) – A great starting point for mixing and scratching.

Pair with free DJ software like Serato DJ Lite or Virtual DJ.

🛠️ Setting Up Your Home Studio on a Budget

1️⃣ Choose a Quiet Space: A small bedroom or corner works fine! Reduce noise with soft furniture (like blankets or pillows).
2️⃣ Position Your Equipment: Place your laptop, microphone, and speakers for easy access. If possible, avoid placing your speakers too close to walls to prevent distortion.
3️⃣ Use Free Plugins & Sounds: Websites like Spitfire LABS, Cymatics, and Plugin Boutique offer free synths, drum kits, and effects.
4️⃣ Start Making Music! Record, experiment, and don’t worry about perfection—just create!
