The Rekordshop

Welcome to the Rekordshop, a virtual network which gives you direct access to music industry professionals, young advocates and youth workers who will provide the guidance you need to maximise your potential!

Independent Record Shops have been fundamental to the growth of the music industry for decades and have played a special role in local communities. Your local record shop was a community hub: the beating heart of local culture and an embodiment of expertise and musical passion. It was a place where you would bump into local heroes and have direct access to music industry professionals. Unfortunately the transition to a digital world has led to the demise of the local record shops, depriving the young people of today with the same networking opportunities which were once available. Until now…..

Rekordshop is a new virtual version of the independent record shop, an online community hub where young people can interact with music professionals from all corners of the industry.

What are you waiting for… come and join our every growing community. Its time for us to level up… and you’re coming with us!

Free 2 Talk Background

Free2Talk is a community interest company based in Northampton. We provide Youth Groups, Mentoring, Family Support and for the past 10 years an accredited music programme. Between 2020 & 2021, the music programme served over 400 young people in Northampton. Our output included work in schools, referral units, youth clubs, workshops at our studios & our developing artists group. We a have team of young leaders that have regular meetings to improve the courses for the next generation. Our funding for 2022-2024 has a heavy focus on support networks and sustainability.
There is a steering group of stakeholders who have proposed an online support network accessible for young musicians to seek information, advice and guidance from local music professionals. For young people with particular strengths, needs or direction a mentor would be matched from within the community of practice. The collaboration is working towards becoming a formal group to increase support for young musicians in their music production, recording, broadcasting or music events. We have learnt the need for this from our previous programmes where young people continue to seek developmental support from tutors after the programme ends.

Based on our previous meetings with music professionals, we found that there was a correlation between their levels of support and their levels of success. This support usually came from places such as the record shop. This is where young aspiring professionals could get feedback on their work, find out what is going on, learn new skills and share ideas. The number of people aged under 25 who attend places like record stores has dramatically dropped in the last 10 years. Our young people have expressed the requirement for an online support network, as this is what best supports their needs.
